Wootz
Ausgangsstahl für den orientalisch-arabischen Damaszenerstahl.
Wootz, auch ostindischer Stahl genannt, besteht aus gering legiertem Stahl mit Spuren von Kohlenstoff, Vanadium und Molybdän. Diese Spuren sind später für die Ausbildung von Zementitlinien im Damaszenerstahl wichtig.
An der Weltausstellung in London 1851 besichtigte Johann Conrad Fischer eine ganze aus Wootz bestehende Kollektion.

Wootz – the term is from India, but different words are used in Persian, Arabic and Chinese – is a steel alloy with traces of carbon, vanadium and molybdenum. These traces are important for the cementite patterns that appear on Damascus steel.
Johann Conrad Fischer visited an entire collection consisting of wootz at the Great Exhibtion in London in 1851.
