Zündloch

Öffnung im Lauf von Gewehren und Geschützen zum Anzünden der Treibladung.

Bis Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts wurden Zündlöcher direkt in den Gewehrlauf gebohrt. Dies bewirkte eine kürzere Lebenszeit des Rohrs, da bei jedem Schuss die explodierenden Gase das Zündloch vergrösserten und der Lauf Schaden nahm. 1774 entwickelte Jean-Baptiste Vaquette de Gribeauval ein Zündloch mit Gewinde, in welches ein Zündkern eingeschraubt werden konnte. Das bot einerseits den Vorteil, dass der Zündkern aus resistenterem Material gefertigt sein konnte wie der Rest des Laufs, andererseits konnte ein «ausgeschossener» Zündkern einfach ausgetauscht werden. Ab 1803 begannen Büchsenmacher in London das Zündloch mit Platin auszukleiden.

Until the mid-18th century, ignition holes were drilled directly into the rifle barrel. This caused the barrel to have a shorter life, since with each shot the exploding gases enlarged the ignition hole and damaged the barrel. In 1774, Jean-Baptiste Vaquette de Gribeauval developed a threaded primer hole into which a primer core could be screwed. On the one hand, this offered the advantage that the primer could be made of more resistant material than the rest of the barrel, and on the other hand, a ‘shot-out’ primer could be easily replaced. Starting in 1803, gunsmiths in London began lining the ignition hole with platinum.
