Ölgas
Leuchtgas, das durch die Spaltung von Mineralölen bei höheren Temperaturen erzeugt wird.
Typischerweise wurde Ölgas aus Petroleumrückständen, Steinkohleteeröl, Walöl und Paraffinöl hergestellt. Ein Pionier in der Ölgasherstellung war Philip Taylor, der 1824 ein Patent für sein Verfahren erhielt. Doch in den 1830er-Jahren verlor das Ölgas gegenüber dem billigeren Kohlegas an Bedeutung.
fuel (or illuminating) gas
An illuminating gas that is generated by the cleavage of mineral oils at high temperatures.
Illuminating gas was usually obtained from petroleum residues, coal tar oil, whale oil and paraffin oil. One of the pioneers in the production of illuminating gas was Philip Taylor, who was granted a patent for his process in 1824. However, illuminating gas lost its importance in the 1830s with the appearance of coal gas, which was cheaper.
