HMS Endeavour

HMS Endeavour

The sailing ship of the explorer James Cook with which he undertook his first journey to the South Seas between 1768 and 1771.

While in London in 1825, Johann Conrad Fischer describes a ship docked in the Thames and rebuilt as a warship as ‘Cook’s ship’. However, this could not have been the HMS Endeavour since that vessel was sold in 1775 and was renamed the Lord Sandwich II in 1778. Another theory doing the rounds at the time was that it was not Cook’s Endeavour but rather the Discovery, another of his ships. The Discovery, however, sank in 1797. The ship that Johann Conrad Fischer saw was in fact another ship named Discovery that had been commanded by George Vancouver: it was the so-called Vancouver’s Discovery.
