Roman concrete
A concrete-like substance or a method of manufacture, which the Romans used from the 3rd century BC for construction.
The ancient formulation resulted in the formation of a special crystalline structure, aluminium tobermorite, when the concrete set. This expanded to fill cavities in the material with a stable crystal lattice, thus preventing penetration by water and stopping the expansion of cracks in the material.
Roman concrete is also known as opus caementicium.
