luminiferous aether

A hypothetical substance whose existence was postulated at the end of the 17th century as a medium for the spread of light.

The main proponents of the luminiferous aether theory were Cristiaan Huygens (1629–1695) and Robert Hooke (1635–1703). The theory continued to play an important role into the 20th century. The spread of light and other electromagnetic waves was explained by assuming the existence of a space that is filled with aether. The first doubts about the theory’s validity were raised by the experiments of Michelson and Morley. Later experiments confirmed that aether did not exist.
