Die Aufgabe des Dampfes ist es, im Zylinder durch Abkühlung und Kondensation einen Unterdruck zu erzeugen.
Die atmosphärische Dampfmaschine von Thomas Newcomen von 1712 gilt als die erste kommerziell erfolgreiche Dampfmaschine der Geschichte. Sie wurde im Bergbau als Wasserpumpe verwendet.
