hydrochloric acid
An aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride.
An older designation is acide muriatique/muriatic acid. The term was coined in the 18th century by Antoine Lavoisier, who drew on the Latin word muria for brine, on the analogy of the term Acide Muriatique Oxygéné, which is still used in English as muriatic acid.
